Better Image Quality in Bright Rooms. Deeper Blacks. Richer Colors.
The Carl's Place High Contrast Gray Impact Screen is engineered for environments where ambient light is unavoidable. The gray surface absorbs stray light instead of reflecting it, delivering deeper blacks, enhanced contrast, and more vibrant colors — even when you can't fully darken your space.
Built from thick, three-layer polyester with the tightest weave Carl's Place offers, this screen combines premium durability with projection performance that outshines standard white screens in challenging lighting conditions. Tested to withstand impacts up to 250 MPH, it handles real golf balls at full swing speeds without compromise.
If you're building in a garage with windows, a basement with recessed lighting, or a commercial space like a sports bar or golf studio where you can't control ambient light, this is your screen.
Key Benefits
✔ High Contrast Gray Surface
Gray screens absorb ambient light rather than reflecting it. The result: deeper blacks, better shadow detail, and more vivid colors compared to white screens in the same lighting conditions.
✔ Ideal for Bright Environments
Windows, overhead lighting, open floor plans — if you can't fully black out your space, the High Contrast Gray screen compensates by rejecting ambient light and preserving image quality.
✔ Three-Layer Premium Construction
Same thick, multilayer fabric and tight weave as the Premium white screen. This is the top-tier material in gray.
✔ Tested to 250 MPH Ball Speeds
Handles real golf balls at full swing speeds. Same impact rating as all Carl's Place screens.
✔ Smoothest Surface for 4K Projection
The tight weave eliminates visible texture, delivering clean HD and 4K images with no screen door effect.
✔ Made to Order with Three Finishing Options
Every screen is sewn in-house by Carl's Place. Choose Classic, Classic with Flaps, or Classic with Loop Fastener depending on your setup.
✔ Indoor Use Only
Designed for controlled indoor environments — garages, basements, commercial bays, and dedicated sim rooms.
Who Is This For?
✅ Garage simulators with windows that let in daylight
✅ Basement builds with recessed lighting that can't be fully dimmed
✅ Commercial installations — sports bars, golf studios, entertainment venues
✅ Multi-purpose rooms where blackout conditions aren't practical
✅ Builders who prioritize image quality over price
✅ Anyone using a high-lumen projector in a partially lit space
✅ Golfers who want deeper blacks and richer colors without fighting ambient light
Gray vs. White: When Does Gray Make Sense?
Standard white impact screens reflect light — all light, including ambient light from windows, lamps, and overhead fixtures. This washes out the projected image, reducing contrast and making blacks look gray.
A gray screen absorbs ambient light while still reflecting the projector's light. The result:
- Deeper blacks: Dark areas of the image stay dark instead of washing out
- Better contrast: The difference between light and dark areas is more pronounced
- More vivid colors: Colors pop instead of looking faded
- Less eye strain: The image is easier to look at in mixed lighting
When to choose gray:
- You can't fully darken your space (windows, ambient lighting, open layouts)
- Your projector has high lumen output (3,000+ lumens)
- You're building in a commercial environment with variable lighting
- Image quality in bright conditions is a priority
When white is fine:
- You can fully black out your room
- You're using a lower-lumen projector (under 2,500 lumens)
- Maximum brightness is more important than contrast
Finishing Styles Explained
Classic
The standard finishing. 2.5" black vinyl edges with grommets all the way around. Grommets are 3/4" outer diameter, 3/8" inner diameter with a smooth, rounded appearance. Mount using ball bungees or zip ties to any frame or truss system. Simple, clean, effective.
Classic with Flaps
Classic finishing plus 7" nylon flaps edged with 1" loop fastener strips around the entire perimeter. The flaps let you cover your frame for a cleaner look and allow you to attach foam safety cushions (sold separately) to protect against errant shots hitting the frame. This is the same style used in Carl's Place DIY Enclosure Kits.
Classic with Loop Fastener
Classic finishing plus 1" loop fastener strips sewn around the entire screen perimeter. Great for DIYers who want to attach curtains, nets, side panels, or safety cushions using hook fastener. This is the same style used in Carl's Place Pro Enclosure Kits.

Installation Guidelines
Mounting Your Screen
- Use 6" or 9" ball bungees to attach the screen to your frame, truss, or enclosure
- Do not secure directly through the grommet holes — this prevents the screen from flexing on impact and increases ball rebound
- Do not over-tension the screen; some slack is required for proper impact absorption
- 9" bungees allow more slack and reduce bounceback; 6" bungees provide more tension
- Add or remove bungees to find your preferred balance between tension and slack
Correct Side Orientation
- The screen has a distinct front and back — only the front is rated for ball impact
- Mount with the Carl's Place logo in the bottom-left corner, facing the golfer
Projector Considerations
- Gray screens work best with high-lumen projectors (3,000+ lumens recommended)
- Because gray absorbs some projector light along with ambient light, lower-lumen projectors may produce a dimmer image than on a white screen
- In fully dark rooms, a white screen may actually look brighter — gray is optimized for mixed lighting
Rear Clearance
- Maintain 12-16" of space between the screen and any wall, pole, or surface behind it
- This allows the screen to flex on impact without striking hard surfaces
Care & Maintenance
- Use clean, white golf balls without dirt, grass, or marker ink
- Clean your clubs regularly — dirty grooves transfer debris to the screen
- Store in a dry, clean area when not in use
- Do not iron — heat can damage the material
- Refer to Carl's Place Care & Use documentation for cleaning instructions
Pairs Well With
- Carl's Place DIY or Pro Enclosure Kits — For a complete, immersive setup
- High-Lumen Projectors — 3,000+ lumens recommended for best results with gray screens

Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I choose a gray screen over white?
Gray screens absorb ambient light instead of reflecting it. In rooms with windows, overhead lights, or open layouts where you can't achieve full darkness, a gray screen delivers deeper blacks, better contrast, and more vivid colors than a white screen would in the same conditions.
Will a gray screen look darker than white?
In a fully dark room, yes — gray absorbs some of the projector's light along with ambient light. But in a room with any ambient light, the gray screen will actually look better because it rejects that ambient light while a white screen reflects it, washing out the image.
What projector lumens do I need for a gray screen?
We recommend 3,000+ lumens for best results. Higher lumen output compensates for the light absorption of the gray surface. If you're using a lower-lumen projector in a fully dark room, a white screen may be a better choice.
Is this the same material as the Premium white screen?
Yes — same three-layer construction, same tight weave, same durability. The only difference is the gray surface color for ambient light rejection.
Is this good for commercial use?
Yes. Sports bars, golf studios, entertainment venues, and any commercial space with variable or uncontrolled lighting will benefit from the high contrast gray surface. It's tested to 250 MPH for heavy daily use.
Can I use this in a completely dark room?
You can, but there's no advantage. Gray screens are designed to solve the ambient light problem. In a fully dark room, a white screen will produce a brighter image since it reflects more of the projector's light.
How does the image quality compare to the Premium white screen?
In bright conditions: gray wins. In dark conditions: white wins on brightness, gray wins on contrast. The surface smoothness and 4K compatibility are identical.
Which finishing style should I choose?
Classic if you're mounting to a simple frame and don't need to cover the frame or attach accessories. Classic with Flaps if you want to hide the frame and/or attach foam cushions for safety. Classic with Loop Fastener if you're doing a DIY build and want maximum flexibility to attach curtains, nets, or other accessories.
Can I order a custom size?
Yes. Contact us for custom sizing outside the standard options listed.
